About the Story
Where it begins
A Story That Began With Challenge
Alex’s journey began in Mexico, where he lost his father in a workplace accident at just four years old. Poverty and years spent separated from his mother after she left for America shaped much of his childhood.
As a teenager, Alex reunited with his mother in America, where he picked vegetables in the hot California fields and, for a time, lived out of his car.
Arriving in America speaking no English and with little educational support, Alex faced obstacles that seemed impossible to overcome.
Yet even in life’s most difficult seasons, hope can take root.
Growing up
The Power of Resilience
Life would present Alex with challenges, setbacks, and moments of uncertainty. But through perseverance, faith, and determination, he learned a lesson that would change everything:
Your circumstances do not define your future.
Cake Every Day shares the experiences and perspective that helped shape a life built on resilience, gratitude, and purpose.
Passing it on
A Message for the Next Generation
Today, Alex Gomez is a husband, father, and Chick-fil-A Owner/Operator. His journey is proof that where you start is only the beginning of your story.
More than a children’s book, Cake Every Day is a multicultural story of hope and resilience designed to inspire readers of all ages to dream bigger, persevere longer, and believe that something beautiful can come from even the hardest circumstances.
Because every day holds the chance for something beautiful.

Meet the Illustrator
David Estrada
The artist who brought Alex’s story to life
Every page of Cake Every Day was illustrated by David Estrada, an artist in Guatemala. His vibrant pictures bring warmth and authenticity to every page, from a Mexican sunrise and a busy mercado to a scruffy white dog named Cake.
Working closely with Alex and Kevin, David turned Alex’s memories of growing up in Mexico into the pictures that carry this story, painting every one of them by hand.
How the book was made
Every illustration in Cake Every Day was painted by hand. When the right paper was hard to find in Guatemala, the team carried it there and delivered it to David in person.
Working with Alex and Kevin by phone, David spent more than two years hand painting the entire book, refining each page through multiple iterations until it felt just right.
Teaching art in Guatemala
When he isn’t painting, David teaches art to students in Guatemala, passing on the same creativity you see on every page of this book.
It’s one more reason this book is about more than one story: the hope on its pages is being shared with the next generation of young artists, too.
